Dear Virginia Birders,
The National Audubon Society is offering several more volunteer invasive
species removal work days at Shenandoah National Park in the Upper Blue
Ridge Mountains Important Bird Area. Our next work day is this
Saturday, April 7th at the Thornton Gap entrance to the Park from
10am-1pm. These work days help to prevent the spread of invasives such
as Oriental Bittersweet, Autumn Olive, and Tree of Heaven into more
pristine habitats within the park on which many at-risk birds depend.
During our last volunteer day, we cleared a whole slope of Oriental
Bittersweet from roadways near Hwy 211 and Skyline Drive and managed to
stumble upon a few American Woodcocks just feet away from us in the
process. Hopefully this weekend we'll net a few migrants! Volunteers
get free access to the Park so come spend the morning helping the birds
out and enjoy the rest of the afternoon observing them!
Please contact me offline for more information and to sign up.
Aimee
