On Thursday (29 March) at 1300 hrs, I made a short boat trip into the
southwest corner of Mobjack Bay via the York River and around the Guinea
Marshes. Given cold water spray in the face, I could not do any reliable
counting or complete listing. However, we did see some birds of note: 3
NORTHERN GANNETS, >25 SURF SCOTERS (many scoters were unidentified, but all
that I did see were surfers), 100s of BUFFLEHEADS, a COMMON LOON, and
numerous BROWN PELICANS. We saw some other ducks I could not identify. Many
OSPREY were hunting.
On Friday afternoon (30 March), we had three eggs in our bluebird box.
Thus, the lady laid the first egg around Tuesday or Wednesday (27-28
March). Also on Friday, I saw eight WILD TURKEY along Burleigh Road. Oddly,
I have not sees a lot of these around lately.
This morning (2 April) along McFarland Lane (at our house) we had a great
chorus that included BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER,
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, CHIPPING SPARROW, PINE WARBLER, and other
residents. I am surprised that Parulas are not around in numbers yet, and
that B&Ws aren't more numerous.
