Grace,
As others may have told you, Tree Swallows do indeed nest in Bluebird
boxes. Your best bet would be to get a couple more boxes, and put them up next
to/near the existing boxes for the Tree Swallows, if they decide to stay, but
with the opening facing in a different direction. Then, if all goes well, they
will take the new (empty) boxes and leave the Bluebirds alone. Also, they
might keep other Tree Swallows away from the Bluebird boxes next to theirs, but
from other reports I have heard, they wouldn't mind the Bluebirds being there.
Otherwise, they may well take over the Bluebird boxes and nest in them, as
many Tree Swallows are doing elsewhere. However, when that happens, they will
nest and leave, and then the Bluebirds, which have a longer nesting season,
can come back and nest after you clean out the boxes. Good luck.
Good birding,
