[va-bird] Re: Barn Swallow

I have had bluebird nests up for a couple of years. The area
behind my house seems to be excellent for both tree swallows and
bluebirds; and I usually get at least one nestbox of tree
swallows each year. They use the same sized nest box, and the
same sized hole as bluebirds. ('Tis easier to think of your nest
boxes as open to any small cavity nester, except the hated House
Sparrow. Let Nature decide how many of what species will nest in
which box ... tree swallows need nest sites, too!).

[I could use this eMail to put in a mention for the Virginia
Bluebird Society, which encourages people to provide nest boxes
for bluebirds; and recommends a monitoring protocol to collect
data about bluebirds and other nesters; to improve on nesting
success and to encourge good government actions. Their website
is: http://www.virginiabluebirds.org/ ].

Subject: [va-bird] Re: Barn Swallow

I saw my first-ever tree swallows yesterday,
thinking at first that they were the barn
swallows that nest in my shed. There was at
least one barn swallow in the group, but most
were the tree swallows.

I do have a question, though. A couple of the TS
were very interested in my bluebird boxes, both
of which have bluebird pairs and nests in them.
They didn't actually go inside--I'm hoping
they're too big--but one of them clung to the
entrance hole for a long time and kept sticking
its head in. I got very close--within about five
feet--which didn't seem to bother it at all; it
just kept sticking its head in and then turning
to look at me.

Do I need to worry about the bluebirds, or was
this just an inquisitive TS? I've never put up
birdhouses before...

Thanks,

Grace
