I attempted to post twice last evening but it seems it never went through.
Not sure why it's been a "hit or miss" when posting or attempting to post to
VA-Bird.
I will send out the original detailed report later today after I retrieve a
copy from another computer.
Some of the highlights at Great Dismal Swamp along Jericho Ditch - Sunday,
April 2, 2006
BARRED OWL
BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT (singing on territory)
DOWNY WOODPECKER (One observed dewinging large dragonfly and carrying
wingless body to nearby tree, disappearing into nesting cavity!)
HAIRY WOODPECKER
NORTHERN FLICKER
NORTHERN PARULA (singing)
PILEATED WOODPECKER
PINE WARBLER
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK (NESTING PAIR)
***** RED-COCKADED WOODPECKER - (This was a first for me within Great Dismal
Swamp! It was located approximately 35 yards in from Jericho Ditch
Road
about 1/2 - 3/4 way down the road from White Marsh Road.)
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK
WATERTHRUSH (probably Louisiana)
WHITE-EYED VIREO (singing)
WORM-EATING WARBLER (singing; ok, not singing but insect twilling)
A chorus of frogs.
The true gems of the day were the variety and numbers of butterflies! More
info in the original email I will post later today.
