Hello VA Birders,
I am the new Virginia Coordinator for the North American Breeding Bird =
Survey (BBS). The BBS generates data on breeding bird distribution, =
population trends and relative abundances that are actively used in bird =
conservation planning. We are currently seeking volunteers to run several =
vacant VA routes in early to mid-June for the 2005 season. Requirements =
for participation include:
- Access to suitable transportation to complete a survey.
- Good hearing and eyesight.
- The ability to identify all breeding birds in the area by sight and =
sound. Knowledge of bird songs is extremely important, because most birds =
counted on these surveys are singing males.
- New BBS participants must also successfully complete the BBS Methodology =
Training Program before their data will be used in any BBS analyses. The =
training program is available from the national BBS offices and the state =
coordinator.
If you meet the first 3 criteria and would like to participate in the BBS, =
and are able and willing to commit to running one or more routes for two =
or more years, please contact me at this e-mail address, or at the phone =
number below. =20
For information on the BBS, please visit the website at http://www.pwrc.usg=
s.gov/bbs/. Click on the 'Route Locations Map and Route Vacancies' link =
for a map of currently vacant routes. Additional routes not noted on =
this website may also be available.
The BBS depends heavily on volunteers for its continued success. Thanks =
to all of you who have participated or are currently participating in the =
BBS - we appreciate your efforts.=20
