I managed some opportunistic midday birding around Gloucester Point on
Wednesday, April 6th. The drive in yielded a couple of N. ROUGH-WINGED
SWALLOWS at the New Kent rest area on I-64 East. I heard a few CHIPPING
SPARROWS as I drove through Poquoson towards Messick Road, along which were
BARN SWALLOWS, BOAT-TAILED GRACKLES, WILLET, DUNLIN, and GREATER YELLOWLEGS.
Six RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS put on a great show at the Messick Point boat
launch, with a CLAPPER RAIL providing backup vocals.

At the Virginia Institute of Marine Science campus, at least a dozen
NORTHERN GANNETS were working the York River. Also present were a handful
of BROWN PELICANS, COMMON LOON, and a flyover PURPLE MARTIN.

Cheers,

Dan Kluza
