VA BIRDers,

There was a Red-necked Grebe mixed in with some Ruddy Ducks and a single
Canvasback just off the Visitor Center of Mason Neck SP this morning.

I picked up the RNGR as part of the point count route I started last year.
The route was roughly similar to last year in terms of cast of characters,
although the numbers of migrants were down (last year was April 9).
Yellow-rumped Warblers numbered 5, Pine Warblers were 6, Palm Warbler was 1
(yellow), and LA Waterthrush was 2. No Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers and only
one Hermit Thrush were recorded - this seemed low for these two species
given the date. A single Winter Wren along the road was found as well as a
Barred Owl. Forster's Tern plied the Great Marsh (high tide) which also
held 6 Greater Yellowlegs, a Horned Grebe and a pair of Blue-winged Teal.
The nearby Bald Eagles were feeding young in the nest. Belmont Bay held a
few Bonaparte's Gulls, Gadwall, Lesser Scaup and Ring-necked Ducks. Osprey
were easily found. I ran into Jody, the SP interpreter, who related finding
House Wren and Brown Thrasher near the blind at the end of the BayView
Trail.
