Howdy all,
Banding at First Landing State Park has once again been quite slow. Between the
29 March and the 4 April, we banded only 26 birds and had 12 recaptures. On a
brighter side, there are migrants starting to appear at the state park and
within the banding station. The last few days we have seen an increase in
Black-and-white, Parula, Gnatcatcher, and Phoebe numbers. We have not seen
Yellow-throated or Louisiana Waterthrushes yet. But we are hopeful that they
will show up soon.
The days are getting warmer finally, so hopefully it will spur bird movement
towards the north! And hopefully there is at least one calm day this coming
week!
Here is a list of the birds banded this past week: 29 Mar-4 Apr
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2
Carolina Chickadee 1
Brown-headed Nuthatch 1
Eastern Phoebe 2
Northern Parula 1
Black-and-white Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler 5
Pine Warbler 2
Swamp Sparrow 3
Song Sparrow 3
Fox Sparrow 1
Eastern Towhee 1
Hermit Thrush 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1
Pileated Woodpecker 1
TOTAL 26 TOTAL RECAPTURES 12
Everyone is welcome to come to the banding station! We are located at the
intersetion of Long Creek trail and White Hill Lake Trail. It is a good hike to
get to the station, roughly 30-45 minutes, depending how fast you walk, from
the visitors center. Right now, almost all of the birds being captured are
caught before 7:30! And we are only averaging about 4 birds a morning.
I hope it picks up and hope to see you all this spring at the station!
Cheers,
Jethro Runco
