Hello, birders.

A friend and I went to Sky Meadows today. I didn't
think that the birding would be very good with the
very windy conditions but we both wanted to get
outside and I had been planning on looking for
migrants this weekend anyway. When we got out of the
car at the top of the hill, it was not easy to walk
into the wind. But having low expectations for today
was good because it made the birding that much better.
There were a lot of birds around and I got some
firsts for the year for me. We hiked the Snowden and
Gap Run Trails. Parts of trails turned into streams
from the recent rainstorm. There were streamlets of
water throughout the woods, too. The wind wasn't as
strong at the end. Some possible/definite migrants
and new arrivals:

-WOOD DUCK, 6 on pond near Gap Run Trail. With
Canadas.
-raptors including soaring OSPREY
-AM. WOODCOCK, 1 on side of Gap Run Trail, in
campground. We passed the unseen bird, stopped to
look around, happened to turn toward it and it flushed
from about 4 feet away. Quite a surprise. For those
who camp at the park, Woodcock display in the field
that the North Ridge Trail runs through.

-Y.B. SAPSUCKER, 1. We got all woodpecker sp. except
Red-headed, which we didn't go to the Walnut Grove
for.
-E. PHOEBE, 2
-B. CREEPER, 3

-WINTER WREN, 1
-G.C. KINGLET, 6
-B. THRASHER, 1 pair near the Visitor Center

-only warbler that we saw was LA. WATERTHRUSH. 2
singing males, stream near Gap Run Trail
-sparrows - CHIPPING (1) with Wh.-throats in woods,
VESPER (2) along entrance road, FIELD (6), SONG 11+,
WH.-THROATED 27+, D.E. JUNCO (40)
