All,
I birded my way out to Frederick County this morning and then spent a
couple hours birding that area with BJ Little. On the way out, I drove
down Leeds Manor Road from I-66 to Rt. 17 and still found no Louisiana
Waterthrushes. Bummer. At the Rt. 50 bridge over the Shenandoah I
stopped to watch some swallows. Most appeared to be TREE SWALLOWS but I
noticed a few that were dark underneath. Before I could figure out what
they were, one of them dove into one of the CLIFF SWALLOW burrows under
the bridge. I couldn't get a good enough look in the rain to determine
that it was definitely a Cliff Swallow but it wasn't a Barn or a Tree.
A quick drive through Blandy yielded many TREE SWALLOWS on Lake Arnold
but not much else. It was pouring by then and I figured I was wasting
my morning but by the time I got to BJs it had cleared up. We viewed a
nesting GREAT HORNED OWL on Woodside Place and then found 30 WILSON'S
SNIPE and a single PECTORAL SANDPIPER on Kline's Mill Road. Time to
head home after that and endure, I mean enjoy my daughter's 18th
birthday party. Might as well owl tonight since I won't be getting any
sleep!
