I just got back from Wisconsin yesterday. In addition to seeing hundreds of
sandhills including birds displaying, I also stopped at Eagle Optics. They
very kindly allowed me to test as many scopes as I wished. They have a tripod
that can hold four scopes at a time which makes evaluations easy and pleasant.
I was only looking at large objective scopes as I have a smaller objective
scope that I like using on a shoulder mount stock. Both my wife and I wear
glasses so I wanted to look at scopes with good exit pupil depth and I was only
interested in high definition glass. Long story short I whittled it down to two
scopes, Swarovski and the Leica. The only significant difference I could
determine was color definition. The Swarovski has slightly warmer color than
the Leica, particularly at high magnification. In other words the color was
slightly distorted. I would have to say that the Leica had more accurate color
rendition. But on another level I think the Swarovski is a faster scope to
focus but the fine focus on the Leica is a nice feature when you have the time
to enjoy the view. I think they both worked equally well for eyeglass wearers.
And last but not least the weight, Leica is heavier than either the Swarovski
or the Zeiss by almost 10 ounces which can seem like a whole lot more when you
sink in marsh mud with every step like I do.
