For those of you wanting to take a chance and come see the crossbills this
weekend, they were still around quite a bit today, but some folks who got
here about 4:30 and stayed an hour never saw them. I have not seen then
since then, either. I did see them earlier in the afternoon as well as in
the morning.
We will be at a club field trip Saturday morning, but you are welcome to
come by whether we're here or not. The birds are using two feeders now: a
large cylindrical sunflower feeder behind the carport on the right-hand side
of the house, and a smaller one in front of the house. You can watch from
the carport, or you can go to the other end of the house, and around back is
a table and chairs where you can also watch from. I don't know what would
happen if you tried sitting on the front porch glider--it's right by one of
the feeders.
The driveway is very short and there is no parking on the street around
here. You can pull onto the grass on the righthand side of the driveway if
several of you show up at once. Try not to make too much disturbance around
the front of the shed that's there, though--there is a Carolina wren on eggs
on a house mounted to the front of the shed.
I'll give you your choice of two ways to come. The shortest way is to take
81 south to the 3rd (most southerly) Salem exit, make a right at the end of
the ramp onto Wildwood, go to the first light at Main Street and turn left.
Then go a couple of miles and make a right onto Mill. There will be a
Kroger on your left and a Sheetz on your right. Go to the first stop sign
and turn left onto Riverside. Take that about a mile to Twelve O'clock Knob
and make a right. You will go about 6 or 7 miles up, first on flat land
through lots of houses, then uphill past lots of pretty scenery and little
development till you reach the very top of the mountain, and then start back
down the other side. You will go about 1 or 1 1/2 miles down from the peak,
and our house is a small stone house on the right just past Wade Rd. The
address is 4725 and is on the mailbox, which is on the left side of the
road.
If you prefer not to do quite as much driving on the mountain, you can come
down 581, get off onto 419 at Tanglewood Mall, make a right at the end of
the ramp onto 419, go several miles till you see Rt. 221 (there's a light
there), and go left. Go about 5 miles to Twelve O'clock Knob. You'll know
you're getting close when you pass a little BP gas station on your left.
Turn right onto our road (if you see Back Creek Family Practice and Back
Creek Rescue on the right you went too far). Go three miles up to our
house, now on the left, of course.
There is a sheet of paper in the carport for anyone who would like to record
what they see when. Good luck!
