Hello, birders.
I spent an enjoyable day at Sky Meadows State Park in
Fauquier Co. this morning from about 7 - 10:30 birding
the Meadow Trail. The winds were pretty strong, out
of the NNW. Temp. was 49 degrees F at the beginning,
climbing up to 60 at the end. Sky was mostly sunny.
Highlights include:
7 Common Loons flying over. A loose group of 5 were
headed N. Later I saw 2 more flying in wide circles
for some reason. I wonder if they saw the farm ponds
in the area and were thinking about touching down. I
lost these 2 loons in the blue sky, however, so I
don't know where they went.
1 Osprey, checking out the duck ponds before heading
east.
1 Red-headed Woodpecker in the parking lot. Almost in
full adult plumage, a little grayish-brown on face and
forehead.
1 male Ruby-crowned Kinglet singing and showing his
red crown.
Several E. Meadowlarks.
About 13 N. Flickers.
Sparrow numbers were low for this location at this
time of year. About 17 Field, 7 Song, 1 Swamp. 2 E.
Towhee.
Sad note: 1 roadkilled Beaver on Rte. 17.

Fairfax, Va.
