[va-bird] Goodbye Hunting Creek wetlands?

Well - for those that haven't seen the pillage - destruction has started in
and around the Hunting Garden apartments off the GW Parkway, just at the
south end of Alexandria.
Talking to some residents, I was told of a plan to give the space near the
stone bridge a "gateway" appearance. To achieve this end - it looks like a
lot of brush is being removed - along w/ some of the trees. One of those
plastic running fences has been installed and one question I have is - Does
this delineate the boundary of the work being done? The fence runs pretty
close to Hunting Creek. Life goes on just beyond the fence as Mockingbirds
and Carolina Wrens sung and foraged.
If there is an upbeat note...an area of brush that was cleared behind the
apartment buildings will permit easy views from the parking lot to the back
edge of the mudflats. I don't know what kind of heavy equipment will be
present during work times, but this Sunday afternoon, it was silent. I
counted 25 Caspian Terns on the mudflats (about 50 more east of the stone
bridge) - also about 20 Bonaparte's Gulls along with 50 or so RB Gulls and
some GBBGulls. No shorebirds - hoping for some after hearing of Pectoral
Sandpipers at Huntley. Wonder if the construction noise will keep the peeps
away...say your prayers and work out hard (Hulk Hogan said that)...Rich Rieger
