VA Birders,
Today I birded a section of Russell County near Lebanon called the mudhole,
a large pool of water in a pasture that really brings in shore birds and
some waterfowl during migration. I was scanning for shore birds, when a
Golden Eagle suddenly flew into view. It was being harassed by Red-tailed
Hawk. The hawk kept dive bombing the eagle, which on each pass would turn
upside down so its talons were facing the hawk. The eagle kept circling and
the battle went on for a few more minutes until I lost the eagle behind a
hill.
A few minutes later the eagle was back. It was sitting at the side of the
pool eating something, possibly frogs. Once again the hawk began its
harassment. The eagle flew away carrying nothing that I could see. After
several more bombings the eagle finally left the area. The Red-tail went
back to the spot where the eagle had been and finished off whatever was left
of the meal.
Enjoy the birds,
Roger Mayhorn
