Lake Albemarle, Charlottesville
Friday morning update -
I made an early run out to Lake Albemarle, 14 miles west of
Charlottesville, to check up on the Osprey. Two Osprey were observed
yesterday evening between 6:10 and 6:35 p.m and it's possible they are the
same "two" seen off and on this past week.
Upon my arrival by 7:10 a.m. the unmistakable insect-like twill of the
Worm-eating Warbler at the T intersection at the lake got my immediate
attention. A little patience and I was rewarded with a view of it as it
popped out from thick brush alongside the road. I then heard a Louisiana
Waterthrush singing a short distance away to the left and near the water's
edge.
My search for the Osprey (not seen) turned into a walk along a short path
between thick brush leading toward the lake. There were birds everywhere
that included the following highlights:
House Wren
Louisiana Waterthrush - 1 singing
Worm-eating Warbler
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 10, including 1 very vocal male
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - at least 6
and a whole heap of kinglets, both Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned. When I
reached the van parked along the narrow road I couldn't help but notice
small birds fluttering into two pines a few feet away and more flying
in. Kinglets! Lots of kinglets! Both Ruby-Crowned and Golden-crowned
flashing their ruby and gold-yellow caps. I was able to count 6
Ruby-crowned and 15 Golden-crowned and there were more in several other
trees and in the thick underbrush.
It was difficult tearing myself away to make it into the office on
time. I did, but just barely!
Now, if they would just offer a leave category - Spring Birding!
