The snow on March 22nd halted migration at College Creek Hawkwatch, on the
James River, near Williamsburg and on March 23rd we only saw 5 birds, but
today, March 24th, was good, with 54 birds, despite the north wind. Tom
Armour,
Fred Blystone, Bill Williams and I watched 26 Turkey Vultures, 16 Ospreys, 7
Bald Eagles, 3 Northern Harriers (only 5 others so far this season), a
Sharp-shinned Hawk and a Red-tailed Hawk cross the river in 2 hours.
The most recent southerly winds here were March 16th, but the next week
should change that. The season total is now 625. We are on track to have our
second best March in the 10 years of the count.
