Ahead of the warm air and possible storms due to arrive tomorrow, birds were
moving on the good lift from the strong sun today, March 8th, at College
Creek Hawkwatch on the James River near Williamsburg. Fred Blystone, Bill
Williams and I watched as 62 birds crossed the river from about 10-12:30.
There was great variety, too, with 7 species in one 40 minute span. Totals
were 3 Black Vultures, 40 Turkey Vultures, 8 Ospreys, 4 immature Bald Eagles,
1 Cooper's Hawk, 2 Red-shouldered Hawks and 4 Red-tailed Hawks. The season
total is 225.
A few Tree Swallows and Fish Crows were the only other migrants.
