Dear VA-Birders,
Let us agree that this is the last post to VA-Bird concerning the recent
posts of Val & Ian & others.
I find that the carpenter's rule, "Measure Twice, Cut Once" is a good
rule-of-thumb for sending email. It works for email to listservs, to
friends, to family and to co-workers. I write the email, and BEFORE
SENDING, read it once, or twice. I think about who will be reading the
email and think about the impact of my words. Then I take a deep breath and
hit "Send".
FYI, there are now over 800 subscribers to VA-Bird. There are many others
that do not subscribe but read the posts via the archives. Remember, when
you hit "Send" your email is read by all those people, and is kept on the
VA-Bird archives.
I enjoy reading the posts from all birders about Virginia birding. Would we
have heard about the SNOWY OWL at Dulles Airport as quickly without the
listserv? The daily posts about directions, locations, successes and
failures assisted many birders to add this impressive bird to their lists
(or just enjoy the visitor). What a terrific asset Virginia birders have
when we share birding information.
For new subscribers here is the web address for general guidelines for
VA-Bird posts, which is the BirdChat Guidelines document. The overriding
difference is that VA-Bird is solely for posts related to VA birds and VA
birding. Please go to:
http://www.k-state.edu/audubon/chatguidelines.html
Please read the "Topics" and "Netiquette" and "Remedies for Offensive
Behavior". There is even a section for listowners which I will endeavor to
follow. This document should be required reading for all people involved
with any listserv.
Please use my email address (paulbirds19@xxxxxxxxxxx) anytime to communicate
any concerns that should remain off the listserv. I do not monitor the
listserv 24/7 (sometimes I miss an entire day or two) but I read every post
and every private email.
Now, back to VA birds and VA birding. Good weather and good birds arriving
soon.
Paul Mocko
Co-owner, VA-Bird listserv
