[va-bird] FW: Good showing of winter birds in Lincoln, Western Loudoun Co.

Subject: Good showing of winter birds in Lincoln, Western Loudoun Co.

 

On a 3-hour walk through fields and woods of my local patch, I came upon a
very nice flock that included a gorgeous bright male Pine Warbler, a pair of
Hairy Woodpeckers, a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, Pileated Woodpecker, Downies
and Red-Bellied Woodpeckers, a Brown Creeper, a Golden-Crowned Kinglet, a
couple Yellow-Rumped Warblers, a pair of Red-Shouldered Hawks screaming
overhead, and a flyby American Kestrel.  These were all seen in a short
stretch of dirt road, which made all the rest of the walking worthwhile!  My
full list:

 

Great Blue Heron - 1

Black Vulture - 10

Turkey Vulture - 30

Canada Goose - 6

Cooper's Hawk - 1 the last bird I saw, it perched over my head on my
driveway after chasing a Red-Bellied Woodpecker

Red-Shouldered Hawk - 2

Red-Tailed Hawk - 4

Am. Kestrel - 1

Mourning Dove - 10

Barred Owl - 1 heard hooting

Red-Bellied Woodpecker - 15

Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker - 2

Downy Woodpecker - 5

Hairy Woodpecker - 6

No. Flicker - 8

Pileated Woodpecker - 1

Blue Jay - 6

American Crow - 8

Fish Crow - 19 in high, loose flyover flock

Car. Chickadee - 10

Tufted Titmouse - 4

White-Breasted Nuthatch - 4

Brown Creeper - 1

Carolina Wren - 10

Golden-Crowned Kinglet - 1

E. Bluebird - 8 (mostly in pairs)

Robin - 20

Mockingbird - 1

Starling - 6

Yellow-Rumped Warbler - 2

Pine Warbler - 1

Towhee - 2

Song Sparrow - 25 - a ground-feeding flock included one that stood out, with
a bright white collar all the way around its shoulders and back.

White-Throated Sparrow - 12 (haven't seen these in the usual numbers this
winter)

Junco - 5 (ditto)

Cardinal - 20

Common Grackle - 1

House Finch - 8

Goldfinch - 2

House Sparrow - 3

 

I also saw a large herd of about 25 deer and a raccoon walking down the dirt
road ahead of me.
