VA-Birders,
This afternoon I visited Fort CF Smith Park in Arlington and had a fairly
surprising species list when I was finished. Highlights include a very nice
FOX SPARROW where Val Kitchens reported it on 2/18 - this bird is very
interesting in appearance, with a more prominent white eyering than usual and a
lack of rust color on the auriculars, giving it a very grey-headed look. In
this area was a vocal WINTER WREN and a HERMIT THRUSH that dutifully pished.
Also present were: BROWN CREEPER, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS, and a handsome PURPLE FINCH near the vicinity of the feeders.
There are definately things happening out there, so get out and bird!
Yesterday I had a surprising COMMON YELLOWTHROAT singing in Columbia, MD -
obviously very early and possibly a result of the mild winter we have had. The
Fort Smith list is below.
