Dear VA-Birders,
Wednesday afternoon was warm and without wind, and I witnessed a fly hatch
while walking the Potomac Heritage trail in Riverbend Park and Great Falls
NP (McLean). The bugs were about a centimeter long, slow flying, numerous
along the mile+ I walked, and reckless, landing on whomever walked by. Many
fell onto the calm surface of the Potomac, where 80 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 20
MALLARDS, 200 RING-BILLED GULLS and one lone WIDGEON were surface feeding.
First time I have seen this interesting behavior, especially for the diving
Ring-necked ducks. Numerous BUFFLEHEADS were not participating.
The only birds on the riverbank I saw participating in flycatching were E.
BLUEBIRDS.
The Riverbend Park meadow has been maintained, cut down to very short
stubble.
