I attempted to bird Hog Island WMA in Surry County today and, despite
making a call yesterday to make sure it was open to the public, I was
turned away at the gate.  The guards at the gate said it is only open on
the weekend for now which is different from what I was told on the
phone.  I'm not sure what to think but I doubt I'll head over there on a
weekday any time soon.

I then headed over to Craney Island in Portsmouth instead and had the
good fortune of meeting Shirley Devan, Alex Minarik and Fred Blystone
who were doing a bird survey.  We had a good day.  A list of the days
birds and numbers follow, as compiled by Shirley Devan.  Good birding.
