Mr. Mocko,
First of all, I would like to commend you for all the hard work you
must put into making this list work and to also say that I am
extremely grateful for the privaledge to participate in this list.
That said, I am writing because I am concerned about your post
stating you have suspended posting privalidges for two birders.
You stated in your letter to the
list that you felt uncomfortable suspending their priviladges. I
also feel uncomfortable knowing you suspended their posting
priviladges. To me from where I sit the VA birds list is possible
because so many people voluntarily share their information about
birding. All in all this list is a collective endeavor. I am sure your
committment in time and effort far exceeds that of all or most other
participants but still in the final analysis it is a group effort.
As such it seems somehow unfair to me that one person should have so
much power and exercise that power without consulting the larger
group. Is there some way that more people could be involved in the
process of determining what offenses deserve banishment and what
topics should be censored? How does one separate what issues relate
to VA birding and what issues do not? Personally to me birds and
birding are a conduit through which many topics, issues, ideas flow.
So I guess my point is; is there a way a subset of Va birders could
have some voice in these decisions? Why couldn't we have a discussion
on the list about how to implement this process and see if there are enough
people interested in pursuing this concept?
Sincerely,
William Leigh
