[va-bird] Good birding day in Augusta County

Hello all
Today was a very good day for bird watching . Pat & I checked out the area
ponds to see what waterfowl are on the move . Even tho some of our counts are
low it added to number of species seen today. They are as follows .
Swoope area
Smith's
Wood Duck -- 6
Mallard -- 46
Hooded Merganser -- 5
Lesser Yellowlegs -- 1
Tree Swallow -- 1
Boy Scout Camp
Wood Duck -- 6
Mallard -- 56
Blue -- winged Teal -- 3
Green - winged Teal -- 1
Redhead -- 2
Ring -- necked Duck -- 5
Greater Scaup -- 7
Hooded Merganser -- 2
Common Merganser -- 2 males in full breeding plumage & also 3rd spring record
On Rt. 705 after crossing the little bridge a Loggerhead Shrike was seen on the
wires in front of the flooded field .
Bells Lane
Canada Goose -- many but did not see the Cackling geese today . The Canadas
were spread out & some were behind knolls .

China Clay Rd. -- flooded field
Am. Wigeon -- 6
Mallard -- 5
Green -- winged Teal -- 11

Am. Black Duck -- 1

Ring -- necked Duck -- 3
To finish the day a total of 33 Ring -- billed Gulls on the Lowes parking lot
in Staunton. Spring is sort of in the air but the next few days still belong to
winter .
