Flew to Minneapolis last month. We carried a scope on with two pairs of
binoculars and a video camera and cellphones. GPS unit, chargers for
cellphones, batteries for GPS went in the checked bags. My boots had to be
taken off and scanned on departure and return. Boots did not pass because
of metal eyelets. Detected copper bracelet under sleeve of my shirt which I
had forgotten on departure but it did not pick up my medical dogtag. Return
found the dogtag which never occured to me before. The website:
http://www.tsa.gov/public/display?theme=183&content=09000519800720a4
mentioned in previous message was extremely helpful.

A friend in Minnesota had a tripod for our use. We didn't have that to
bother with but my birding buddy has carried one in checked bag, wrapped in
clothes and never had a problem. You wrap in clothes to protect from
damage. Bags are thrown, dropped, smashed and crimped. Inspectors left
notes in all of our checked bags going and coming that they had inspected
inside the bags.

If you are carrying any pocket 6-ring notebooks for field notes, etc., check
them in the bags not being carried on. They have a 6-inch metal rib along
the spine that is inside the material. They will detect that on your person
and it could cause a delay if you carry such a notebook in your pocket.

Do not leave any shoulder straps on outside of checked bags. Many of them
get cut off with knives and thrown away. You might get lucky and the
inspector takes them off and slips them in your bag. They are required to
remove all outside straps and such. Short handles are no problem.

Do not lock any bags whatsoever. They simply take a knife and cut the
locks, straps, material around the lock, whatever, in order to get inside to
inspect. The sheet inspectors put in your bag says it is legal to cut open
whatever they need in order to look inside. Make everything easy for them
in every way.

Let's go birding......
