After spending Saturday working on (ulp!) taxes, a beautiful Sunday p.m.
lured me out in search of duxes.
I started out at Burke Lake, in Fairfax Co. where the selection always seems
to be good. Although no great numbers, there was a good selection of waterfowl
present -
PB Grebe - 2
AM Coot - 5 ( I sure do miss the rafts we used to have at Dyke Marsh)
Hooded Merg - 12
RB Merg - 2
Ruddy Duck - 18
Bunch O' Buffles - 10
C. Gooses - 50 - all big
Mallards - only 2?
on the far NW end of the lake, better viewed from the road to the campground
Redhead - 2 M hanging out loosely w.
L. Scaup - 2 F
At Accotink Lake - I scooped up
ONE - N. Pintail dabbling w. about 20 Mallards in the shallow end of the lake.
also Hooded Merg - 6 all F
The crow population at the lake seems to be healthy relative to other areas
around town. Approx 100 individuals were bathing and frolicking in the shallow
water. Both Fish and Am."S were vocalizing.
Stopping by Kingstowne (south Van Dorn) for one more species - there were
still Ring-necked Ducks present (18) along with a few Buffleheads (3) and some
Mallards - no small geese among the 150 or so Canadas...
A fun afternoon looking at duxes...Rich Rieger
