[va-bird] Riverbend Park: Horned Grebe, Wild Turkeys

Hello VA-Birders:

Except for Buffleheads, there have been fewer ducks this past week than
previously on the Potomac at Great Falls and Riverbend Parks. There are
still lots of Ring-necked Ducks, but fewer than before, and I have not seen
any more Redheads, scaup, or Common Goldeneyes in their midst. However,
other wonderful birds have been passing through: on Tuesday, a HORNED GREBE
diving in the gray choppy water above the Aqueduct Dam and, on Thursday, a
flock of WILD TURKEYS along the river path about a quarter mile upstream
from the Riverbend Visitor Center. I came upon the turkeys a little before
6 PM and counted 10, but I'm sure I missed others that were behind trees.
As I walked closer to the flock, they moved over into a little valley
between the river bank and the steep hillside that goes up to the Nature
Center. Since it was almost sunset, I presume they were planning to spend
the night. On Thursday there were again three Tree Swallows capturing
insects over the river, and on Friday a first-year Bald Eagle was circling
overhead.
