At about 11:30 this morning, I observed a 2nd winter plumaged lesser
black-backed gull in Loudoun County. It was with approximately 200 ring-billed
gulls in the recently harvested sod fields on the west side of the Loudoun
County Parkway, opposite the Loudoun County Sewer Authority. These fields are
north of Waxpool Road and south of Route 7. Three herring gulls were also with
the flock. Although lesser black-backed gulls are reported fairly regularly
inland at the Fauquier Landfill, I can't recall any recent reports of this
species from Loudoun County.
The great blue heron colony on Broad Run that is visible from the Loudoun
County Parkway appears to have at least eleven active nests.
