[va-bird] 1st Highland Phoebe

This evening I spotted our first phoebe, bobbing its tail out by our shed where
they
nest each year under the eaves.
Previous early sightings at this location (7 miles south of Monterey in Highland
County) were on 4/5/01, 3/14/02, and 3/13/03. The early spring record for
Highland is
3/8/87 in the Blue Grass Valley. So today's bird is a record breaker.
There are also a scattering of winter records from (December, January, and
February).
That somewhat confuses the concept of "early record," though I take this one to
be a
"spring" arrival since there have been no phoebes here since last fall.
I recall from last year that there were a number of near-simultaneous phoebe
reports
on the bird lists, and I saw Bart Hutchinson's report from earlier today. So I'm
guessing they are showing up all over.
