The 7th annual hawkwatch on the James River, sponsored by Coastal VA Wildlife
Observatory, enjoyed its best day ever today, March 23rd, with 173 birds. The
next best daily total was 136 on March 23, 1998. Yesterday's total of 75 was
also quite good for the site and the season total is now a bit ahead of the
normal total for this stage, at just under 500 birds.
There were 9 species recorded for both today and yesterday and 10 species for
the 2 days. The site has never registered 10 species in a day. Bill Williams
was also on hand today.
Other arrivals were a Barn Swallow yesterday and a flock of 11 Greater
Yellowlegs today.
