Katherine Higgins and I went on a short birding jaunt this morning
and visited the water areas around Radford, Parrott and Whitethorn,
Va. The best find was 5 White-fronted Geese at the two farm ponds
on the left side of state route 114 (respectively known as the 114
ponds). We had 2 American Wigeon, 6-8 Lesser Scaup and 18-20 Ring-
billed Gulls at the ponds as well. We first flushed the geese at
around 11:30 and again at approximately 1:30 as we came back by the
ponds after going to Whitethorn. Along the river at Radford we had;
Wood Ducks, Black Ducks, Bufflehead, Ring-bill Gulls and approximately
75-100 Tree Swallows. At Parrott, the river was full of rafts of Lesser
& Greater Scaup, Hooded Mergansers, Buffleheads and one lone Goldeneye.
