I left home about 10:30 this morning to go to Pantops Giant down hwy 250
West from Zion Crossroads. About 1/8 mile west of the Boyds Tavern stoplight
on 250 on the south side of the rd is a nice pond. I saw a grebe and some
ducks. I turned around and parked on the side of the road. There was a Red
Necked Grebe and 5 Ring neck ducks(4 male, 1 female-excellent plumage). I got
within about 15' of the grebe before it flew to the other side of the pond.
Winter plumage but bright. There were also 2 Kingfishers working the pond.
The red shouldered hawks are working a large slab of suet in the back yard.
One of the has been carrying sticks around. I think I see the nest about
50-60 yds from the house down in the wetlands in a large oak. Spring fever
has to be in the air. The little birds are ignoring the hawks. A White
breasted Nuthatch just landed between the legs of the female Red Shoulder and
jabbed off a piece of suet and ran. The hawk seems unbothered.
