[va-bird] Burke Lake Loaded

At 3:30 pm today Burke Lake was mostly free of ice around the pier area and
there were lots of birds taking advantage of the warming weather. About 50
some-odd tundra swans were hanging out both in the water and standing and
preening on the ice - giving great views through my scope. There were at
least 8-10 red-necked grebe, a couple of pair of hooded mergansers, 30 or
more common mergansers and a varying number of red-breasted mergansers.
There was also a large flock of ring necked ducks with 8 or so red heads in
among them. Also saw a couple of bufflehead and about a dozen coots.
Plenty of ring billed gulls and surprisingly few Canada geese. Also quite a
few begging mallards in the parking lot and around the boat house and pier.
A noisy pileated woodpecker topped my enjoyment of the afternoon by flying
overhead.
