VA Birders,
On Saturday, March 1st. four members of the Buchanan County Bird Club birded
part of South West Virginia and the New River area of West Virginia. We
started with a section of the Clinch River near Raven, VA hoping for some
waterfowl. The water was too swift from recent rains, but one lone Great
Blue Heron stood vigil on the river bank.

As we progressed toward the Bluefield area we saw a couple of Red-tailed
Hawks circling with Turkey Vultures.
We made our way to the Bluestone Dam where we hoped to get a Bald Eagle, but
the water was high and muddy. However we did get a few Buffleheads, a
Pied-billed Grebe and several Ring-billed Gulls.

As we made our way toward Sandstone Falls along a swollen and muddy New
River a small group of waterfowl caught our eye. I stopped the car and eased
out of the driver's side, camera in hand. I peeked around the car and was
able to get this photo of a male Red-breasted Merganser and a male Hooded
Merganser. http://www.bcplnet.org/birdclub/gallery/Mergansers.htm As they
paddled leisurely away I managed to get this photo of the Red-breasted.
http://www.bcplnet.org/birdclub/gallery/RBMerganser.htm A couple of miles
farther along I got this picture of a male Ring-necked Duck.

As we started to walk out on the wooden walkway at the falls I saw a Brown
Creeper working the tree trunks a few feet away. After some maneuvering I
got this photo. http://www.bcplnet.org/birdclub/gallery/BCreeper.htm On the
way back to the vehicle, after viewing the foaming white water of the falls,
a Winter Wren came out of the end of hollow log and disappeared into a clump
of grass and sticks at the water's edge. With a little patience I took this
photo. http://www.bcplnet.org/birdclub/gallery/WinterWren.htm Some nice
birds and good weather made for a nice outing.

Enjoy the birds,
