Report for March 2 - Lake Moomaw, Bath County
With warming temps and sunshine, it didn't take much to talk spouse into
coming along for a "short" road trip to Lake Moomaw in Bath County.
Approaching from the southern end following Rt. 600 to 603 (a very narrow
but scenic route), we found very few ducks. In the western sector, temps
were 10 degrees cooler (39 to 42 fairenheit) and overcast.
Wild Turkey - 1 (flushed from side of road on Rt. 600 and flew about 20
yards to land in tree for easy viewing)
Wood Duck - 5
Hooded Merganser - 8
Ring-necked Duck - 18
Scaup spc: - 3 (Lesser?)
Rough-legged Hawk (light-phased) - flushed from perch near road
Red-necked Grebe - 1 (photographed)
(All of the above were found south of the public beach area. We did not
drive down to the public beach/boat ramp.)
Further north on Rt. 600 (North of Rt. 39) an adult Red-shouldered Hawk
flew low across the road affording great views. At the Bath County Ponds
along Rt. 600, everything was completely frozen over except for a very
small section at the northern end that held approximately 50 Canada
Geese. The picnic/camping area was closed and snow covered.
A short distance north of the pump station we observed two Bald Eagle
(adult and 3-4 yr) circle overhead.
We continued to Rt. 220 north to Monterey in Highland County for quick stop
at Beverage feeders where we found absolutely NOTHING! A quick stop at the
feeders in McDowell yielded the usual goldfinch, junco, and nuthatch. Just
as we were pulling back onto the road a large "palish" bird came off the
back ridge, low and heading east. Large buteo with long wings. What a
pleasant surprise to observe the second light-phased Rough-legged Hawk of
the day.
