[va-bird] Loudoun County Trip: Another Red-necked Grebe

ANS & the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy ran a raptor search/bird trip today from
2 pm to about 6 pm in central Loudoun County. It was led by Joe Coleman & Bob
Beard.
The highlights of the trip included at least one Red-necked Grebe on Beaverdam
Reservoir, a Barred Owl right along the road in small trees near the Dulles
Greenway Wetlands Mitigation Project, at least 40 Common Mergansers on
Beaverdam, four Turkeys on Reservoir Road near Beaverdam, and not a single
Northern Harrier (the first time ever that one of these trips has not any
Northern Harriers).
43 bird species were seen. Mammals included three young raccoons sitting on
tree limbs eating Smilax (also known as greenthorn) berries along The Woods
Road next to Banshee Reeks, a fox hunting in the fields at Banshee and an
opossum at ANS' Rust Wildlife Sanctuary in Leesburg (all in full light between
2 and 4 pm).
