Nine members of the Lynchburg Bird Club went to Highland and Bath County
today (March 2). Among the highlights in Highland County:
Golden Eagle -3 birds; 1 near the WVA border on Route 644 (Snowy
Mountain); 2 on Route 640 also near the WVA border
Rough-legged Hawk - 2 sightings (possibly of the same bird) on Route 640
near the WVA border
Tree Sparrows - at least 4 birds at the Beverage feeder
We stopped at the pond on Route 220 (in Bath County a few miles from the
Bath/Highland line) and saw:
10 Horned Grebes
14 Great Blue Herons
About 30 Canada Geese
15 Mallards
2 Black Ducks
6 Gadwall
25 Bufflehead
3 Ring-necked Ducks
2 Lesser Scaup
And a real surprise, 1 White-winged Scoter (Randy and Sue Thrasher took
some photos of this bird).
On the way home some of the group found a Red-necked Grebe on a pond near
the Horse Center on Rt. 39 (near Lexington)
