[va-bird] red-necked grebes at Burke Lake, Fairfax Co 3/2/03

Howdy!
With all the red-necked grebes being reported all
over the place I thought it would interesting to
check out Burke Lake off of route 123 in Fairfax
County to see if there were any there.  Shortly
after I arrived at the boat ramp/fishing
dock/concession stand at about 4:15, Kurt Gaskill
joined me and we spotted several red-necked
grebes.  Some were pretty close but others were
off in the shimmering heat haze. So I walked
towards the dam along the slushy, shoreline path
to "park bench point" where there was an
excellent view of most of the unfrozen area of
the lake between the dam and the concession
stand.  Here are the totals.  I think this is
more red-necked grebes than I have ever seen in
one spot! 8-)

17 red-necked grebes
1 horned grebe
1 pied-billed grebe
11 coot
1F and 5M Hooded Merganser
14M Red-breasted Merganser
9M and 5F Common Merganser
32 Ring-necked Duck
50-60 Scaup (all that I identified were Lesser) 
15-20 Ruddy Duck
4M and 1F Bufflehead
2 Black Duck
15-20 Mallard (excluding the Mallard hybrids
begging for food near the concession stand)
20-25 Canada Geese
4 great blue heron
about 150 ring-billed gulls
13 herring gulls
about 90 robins
