Hi all,
There is a Red-necked Grebe here in the harbor today at Cape Charles (also
noted by Steve Rottenborn and Mike Rogers last week), and with the
Centreville bird, it may be that we're in for part of the enormous influx of
the species now being seen in states just to our north. The only recorded
influx of great magnitude (>350 birds) came in February 1994 in Virginia. In
a typical year, only 2-3 Red-necked Grebes are reported. Any inland body of
water can hold one or a few, and it seems that looking for them during foul
weather (fog and rain in particular) is most profitable. In 1994, a few were
even seen on pelagic trips far offshore!
