This morning, March 1, Paul Pisano and Lisa Shannon and I followed up on a
Red-necked Grebe found on Wednesday by Erika Wilson and company near the
mouth of Four Mile Run. Collectively we found:
7 + between Memorial Bridge and 14th Street Bridge (or US 50 and I 395); in
DC waters
2 at the mouth of Four Mile Run, 1 near the GW Parkway shoreline; in DC
waters
2 off Jones Point, Alexandria: one that came as close as 15 or 20 feet from
us!! (in Virginia and DC waters) and the other way across the river near the
Maryland shoreline (in Maryland waters)
Among other birds we saw were a Horned Grebe and a male Common Goldeneye
near the mouth of the Tidal Basin (in DC), more than 200 Common Mergansers
(with one Red-necked) from Belle Haven Marina in Alexandria (most of which
were in Virginia waters), and one adult Lesser Black-backed Gull on the east
side of the stone bridge on GW Parkway south of old town Alexandria. And no
Bald Eagles anywhere.
Best,
Rob Hilton
