[va-bird] Turkey Vultures and Eastern Phoebe, migrants and nestbuilding

Greetings...

On Thursday (14 MAR 02) I was sitting outside of Chipotle in Fredericksburg
eating my lunch when I noticed the first of six or seven kettles of Turkey
Vultures. The kettles varied in size from fifteen to fifty-five birds. Each
did the same thing; kettling up, and then streaming out northwesterly. My
total was 153 birds in about twenty minutes. Wish I could have stayed
longer. Today, while at the same location but only for about five minutes,
at around three o'clock, I had one kettle of 25 birds doing the same thing.
While it is hard to ever be sure of which Turkey Vultures are migrating, and
which are locals, the birds on Thursday truly seemed to be moving, and this
is the time for them to push through.

Today began nest building for Eastern Phoebes in my yard. One bird had
returned earlier in the week, and today was the first time I saw two at once.
Last year they reused a nest affixed to my shed that they had built two
years earlier. The nest fell, wiping out the young. The built a nest on the
other side of my shed, and reattempted. This year, they are building a new
nest at the location of the fallen nest from last year, ignoring the
completely intact nest on the other side of the shed. I wish them better
luck this year.

Cheers...

Todd
