VA BIRDers,
Nothing too unusual, but it was a reasonably pleasant day of birding before
droplets of water fell from the sky. Some of the interesting species were:
DC Cormorant - (1) at Hunting Cr Bay
Great Egret - (1) near the mudflats, west side of the Stone Bridge at Hunting
Cr
Tundra Swan - (19) at the Great Marsh of Mason Neck, the number seems a bit
low
Mute Swan - (1) in the middle of Powell's Creek inland bay, a rare bird along
the northern Potomac.
Wood Duck - (19) at the Great Marsh, two widely scattered mixed sex bunches
Redhead - (2) seen Friday eve, 3/1/02, off the Dyke Marsh picnic area, nearby
were 150 Lesser Scaup. Also noted at that time were 2 Wigeon, 10 Gadwall, 50
Am Black Duck, 200 Mallard, 2 No. Pintail and 20 Common Mergansers.
Red-breasted Merganser - (12) on Belmont Bay
Osprey - (2) sitting on the post on the west side of Belmont Bay that has the
number "3" on it, same as last week.
Killdeer - (52) noted at the Hunting Cr mudflats
Greater Yellowlegs - (6) at the Great Marsh
Lesser Yellowlegs - (1) at the Hunting Cr mudflats
Common Snipe - (8) at the Great Marsh including 3 on the Hunting Cr mudflats
Am Woodcock - (3) displaying on the playing fields west of Bull Run Marina at
dawn
Lesser Black-backed Gull - (3) at the Pr Wm Co dump, 3rd winter and an adult
and apparently the finely streaked version noted by Bob Abrams at this
location 2 weeks ago. The mantle color seemed just a bit darker than your
typical Lesser. I did not get to see it fly. The gonys spot was red.
