With most of the ponds in the area frozen, the
Mattaponi River in Walkerton between the bridge
and Whitehall had more waterfowl than I have ever
seen in this locale, including a few species I
have not seen in this river before.  

The Pocket and the Pamunkey RIver by Elsing Green
also had good numbers of waterfowl in the late
afternoon.  The tide was very low and some of the
mud-bars such as the ones near the boat ramp just
downriver from Pamunkey reservation were covered
with shorebirds. SHovelers and coot, which had
been here in large numbers, could not be found
today.
