I visited Riverside picnic area this morning north of Mt. Vernon. Even though
most of the river was frozen, there were loads of waterfowl in a few open
areas, and many thousands off in the distance near Mt. Vernon. Species seen
were Canada goose, mallard, black duck, gadwall, American wigeon, redhead,
canvasback, ring-necked duck, lesser scaup, bufflehead, hooded merganser,
common merganser, ruddy duck, coot, and pied-billed grebe. As I was leaving
two immature eagles landed on the ice, one of them carrying a freshly killed
ring-necked duck. In short order three other eagles landed nearby.
Surprisingly, there was no squabbling over the kill.
