This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed at 10:30 a.m. on
Tuesday, February 6.
Top birds this week are RAZORBILL in DE and MD and YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRD in MD.
Other birds of interest include geese, ducks, GREAT EGRET, NORTHERN
GOSHAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, falcons, PURPLE SANDPIPER, ICELAND, LESSER
BLACK-BACKED, and GLACOUS GULL, SHORT-EARED OWL, TREE SWALLOW,
NORTHERN SHRIKE, sparrows, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and EASTERN MEADOWLARK.
Individual RAZORBILLS were seen at Indian River Inlet, Sussex Co, DE
and at Ocean City inlet, Worcester Co, MD on Feb 3.
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were seen through Feb 1 in the fields around
Wilson Road, Rising Sun, Cecil Co, MD.
CACKLING GEESE were found in several locations including Woodland
Beach Wildlife Area, Kent Co, DE on Feb 2, Washington Channel, East
Potomac Park, Washington, DC on Feb 3, and the east side of Chandlee
Road just north of Route 273, Cecil Co, MD (DeLorme 77A5/6). The
Chandlee Road location also had an adult GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE.
A ROSS'S GOOSE was located again along Parkgate Drive, near
Nokesville, Prince William Co, VA on Feb 4.
The EURASIAN WIGEON at the Eagle's Nest Golf Course pond, Worcester
Co, MD was seen again on January 30.
A flock of COMMON EIDERS was sometimes visible on the south side of
the jetty at Ocean City inlet on Feb 3.
Fourteen REDHEADS swam in the Potomac at Riverbend Park, Fairfax Co,
VA on Feb 3. A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen farther up river at
Cumberland, Allegany Co, MD on Feb 4.
A GREAT EGRET was seen at Woodland Beach Wildlife Area, DE on Feb 2.
A female NORTHERN GOSHAWK is being seen along Molesworth Terrace, Mt.
Airy, Carroll Co, MD. A juvenile GOLDEN EAGLE was at Pickering Creek
Audubon Center, Talbot Co, MD on Jan 31. PEREGRINE FALCONS were
spotted along Paint Branch Trail, College Park, Prince Georges Co, MD
on Feb 2 and at the Ocean City inlet, MD on Feb 3. Two MERLINS were
found on the golf course near Hains Point, Washington, DC on Feb 3.
PURPLE SANDPIPERS were found on Feb 3 at Ocean City inlet, Indian
River inlet, and Herring Point in Cape Henlopen State Park, Sussex Co,
DE.
Two first winter GLAUCOUS GULLS and 5 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS,
including 1 first winter bird, were found at the Fauquier Co, VA,
Landfill on Feb 3. An adult GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Prime Hook
Beach, Sussex Co, DE on Feb 3.
An adult ICELAND GULL was at Schoolhouse Pond, Prince George's Co, MD
on Feb 2. Another adult ICELAND GULL was seen along Fowler's Beach,
Sussex Co, DE on Feb 4.
An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was found at Herring Point in Cape
Henlopen State Park on Feb 3. Another LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at
the north pond at Ted Harvey Wildlife Management Area, Kent Co, DE on
Feb 2.
A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen in the Prime Hook NWR marshes along
Broadkill Road, Sussex Co, DE on Feb 3. Two other SHORT-EARED OWLS
were seen on the Port Mahon road, Kent Co, DE on Feb 2. Two
SHORT-EARED OWLS were found on Crenshaw Road near Rectortown, Fauquier
Co, VA on Feb 4.
TREE SWALLOWS were found at Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, MD on Jan
31.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE continues on the entrance road to the headquarters
of Prime Hook NWR, DE. The bird has been reported from various
locations along the road.
A WOOD THRUSH has been reported visiting a suet feeder in Manassas,
Prince William Co, VA.
The CLAY-COLORED SPARROW on Bulle Rocke Parkway about 0.5 miles from
Rte 155, Harford Co, MD was seen on Feb 3.
IPSWICH SPARROWS (a subspecies of Savannah Sparrow) fed on the bayside
beach at the Point in Cape Henlopen State Park on Feb 3. Another was
seen at Fowler Beach, Sussex Co, DE on Feb 4.
VESPER SPARROWS were seen in western Charles City, VA on Feb 3.
A very lucky yard in Virginia Beach, VA has ongoing visits from
NASHVILLE WARBLER and YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER.
Three EASTERN MEADOWLARKS were spotted at Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince
William Co, VA on Feb 3.
An immature BALTIMORE ORIOLE continues to visit the feeding station at
the Visitor's Center at Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary, Prince Georges Co,
MD.
