While several of us were cheering for the Red-shoulders, the winners
were clearly the 25 Red-tailed Hawks seen on a birds of prey field
trip in Loudoun County yesterday.
The highlights of an ANS/LWC Birds of Prey field trip & class in
Loudoun County were a pair of BALD EAGLES on the nest at the Dulles
Wetlands, 6 Northern Harriers, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 25 Red-tailed hawks, 9
Red-shouldered Hawks, and 5 American Kestrels, and a Barred Owl, .
The morning was spent visiting roads around Banshee Reeks, the middle
of the day was spent looking at skins and mounted raptors at the
Smithsonian Naturalist Center (a wonderful resource in Leesburg open
to the public), and late in the day the group visited roads around
Lucketts.
We were also int'd to watch a flock of at least 25 Gadwall land on the
pond next to the Visitor Center at Banshee Reeks and find a Savannah
Sparrow near Lucketts.
