Hello all,
Thirteen intrepid bird watchers joined Carol and me for a walk at Riverbend
Park, Fairfax County this morning. The walk was sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Northern Virginia and The Bird Feeder in Reston.
Most of the waterfowl activity, and the adult BALD EAGLE we spotted, was up
river from the Vistor Center.
Highlights included:
CANVASBACK--1
REDHEAD--14
RINGNECKED DUCK--hundreds
BUFFLEHEAD--at least a hundred
COMMON MERGANSER--8
The Canvasback, Redheads, and several of the Common Mergansers were in amongst
the raft of Ring-necked Ducks. They were along the far shore no more than 500
yards or so up river from the Visitor Center. (Last Saturday, most of the
activity was downriver from the Visitor Center.) During the time we observed
them, the group would float downriver a ways, then swim up river, and repeat.
This gave everyone a chance for good looks at all five species.
The Buffleheads were spread out up and down river from the Visitor Center
Highlights of the non-waterfowl sightings included:
BALD EAGLE--1
EASTERN BLUEBIRD--6
DOWNY WOODPECKER--5
HAIRY WOODPECKER--2 (a male and a female)
PILEATED WOODPECKER--2
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH--7
Good birding to all.
