The 10th consecutive year of the College Creek Hawkwatch began today. The
hawkwatch is the only regular late winter/spring hawkwatch in Virginia. The
site
is just east of Williamsburg, on the Colonial Parkway, where northbound
migrants cross the James River, usually from about 10 a.m to 1 p.m. It is a
volunteer effort operated by Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory. The season
usually extends to late May. Visitors are welcome.
Today, February 8th, Fred Blystone and I watched as the first migrant of the
season, a Red-tailed Hawk crossed, followed soon by a group of 8 Black
Vultures, 3 Turkey Vultures, an immature Bald Eagle and another Red-tailed. We
will make regular posts to the List Serve thoughout the season.
